G-line
Tour – A Brief Overview of the G-line Facility and
G-line Safety Features for G-line Staff and Students
Detlef Smilgies, November 2002
Part
A: G-line Facility
G-line access – G-line can be accessed through the link tunnel to
the Wilson Lab and the G-line outside door. For safety reasons the outside
door has to be kept locked at all times, so that it cannot be opened from
the outside without a key. Visitors should always be accompanied by G-line
personnel.
Picture board – A picture board at the end of the link tunnel shows
all staff and students presently working at G-line. A telephone list including
emergency numbers and this memo are also displayed.
House keys – G-line can be accessed with a Wilson Lab house key,
which will be handed out to all persons working at G-line. It will be necessary
to attend the both the Wilson Lab and CHESS safety instructions, since
this key will provide access all over the Wilson Lab.
Beam phone – A beam phone allows you to make general announcements
or to page a person within the Wilson Laboratory. CHESS and G-line use
normally line 10. G-line beamphones are located close to the picture board,
at the G3 control desk, and inside G cave.
CHESS phone – If you are being paged on 5-7163, you can take the
call at the CHESS phone. If you know where you can be reached, please make
use the phones at the hutches or in the office area.
Public terminal – There is a public PC terminal for web access,
Bear Access, and e-mail in the meeting area.
Kitchen area – There is a small kitchen area with a fridge and a
microwave oven. Both are for use with food only! Eating areas are the office
area, the round table and the picnic table in front of the building. No
food or drinks in the hutches and the Chemical Room, please!
Building exhaust system – In connection with the possibility of
handling hazardous gases at the G3 station, the air in the G-line building
is exchanged about once a minute. The air intake is to your left, when
you step out of the G-line door. Please do not smoke or have a BBQ at the
air intake! To the left of the G3 control desk is an emergency exhaust
button which puts the fan into highest speed.
Thermostat – At times we have been having problems with the temperature
control in the G-line building. If you find the temperature way too hot
or too cold, please notify Alan Pauling or Dana Richter.
G-line Mechanical Room – The Mechanical Room contains the controls
of the building exhaust system, the air conditioning system, and cooling
water circuits.
Chemistry Room – The EH&S Chemical Safety Training is obligatory
for all users of the G-line Chem Room, in particular with respect of
operation of the flow hood and the handling and temporary storage of chemical
substances. Safe handling of chemical substances is only ensured in the
flow hood, if the window is lowered to the marked position. The tell-tale
strip will indicate the air flow. If you want to store solvents or other
chemical substances in the G-line Chem Room, make sure that containers
are closed and properly marked according to EH&S standards. Material
Safety Data Sheets must be provided which can be obtained from the web
at the Public Terminal. Storage of hazardous substances needs prior approval
of the CHESS Safety Committee. Substances have to be removed from the Chem
Room by the users after the end of the experiment. In order to perform
chemical reactions in the G-line Chem Lab, a Standard Operating Procedure
has to be provided and approved of by the CHESS Safety Committee, before
any work in the Chem Lab may be done. No food should be stored
or eaten in the Chem Room!
Shop Access – If you would like to use the CHESS User Shop, you
will need a shop orientation provided by Dana Richter and Walt Protas.
Walt will also be available to help you with the tools during regular working
hours.

B: Safety
Fire alarm – In case of a fire alarm, vacate the G-line building
immediately through the outside door. Walk over to the outside area
in front of the CHESS reception, to obtain more instruction. In case of
a fire at G-line, immediately vacate the building through the outside door
(G-line emergency exit), and walk outside over to the CHESS reception to
notify the CHESS operator, unless you already hear the fire alarm (in which
case you will just wait outside). There are smoke sensors and a sprinkler
system (acting on heat) inside the hutches. The G-line doors at both ends
of the tunnel will automatically fall shut. Do not use the fire extinguishers,
unless you have received appropriate training.
Water leak – In case of a water leak in the G-line building or the
tunnel, for instance after a heavy rainfall, notify the CHESS operator
as well as Alan Pauling or Dana Richter immediately.
Radiation monitoring – In order to ensure radiation safety at G-line,
there are a high-energy gamma and a fast neutron detector outside the G
cave. In case of a trip, indicated by an acoustic alarm, please notify
the CHESS operator immediately, so that the reason for the alarm can be
investigated and the monitor reset. Furthermore, environmental radiation
badges are spread out over G-line including the office area. These badges
are checked bimonthly by the Wilson Lab Safety Group.
Personal radiation badges – Radiation badges must be worn for personal
protection and monitoring during work in the G hutches and in the G cave.
We strongly recommend badges to be worn at all times in the G-line area,
as soon as you cross the yellow-black line in the entrance area. Permanent
radiation badges should be stored at the G-line badge board. Badge exchange
is on the first of every other month, i.e. 1/1, 3/1, 5/1, … by the CHESS
Operator. Note that old badges have to be returned within 48 hours of the
return date, before new badges will be handed out. If you miss the badge
exchange within a 48 hour grace period, please contact the CHESS Operator
to hand in your old badge and receive a new one. Lost badges should be
reported immediately to Detlef Smilgies.
Red and Yellow Tags - Tags are safety features marking that a piece
of equipment is locked out for personal safety (red tags) or equipment
safety (yellow tags). Each tag lists one or several persons who are authorized
to remove the tag. Never use tagged equipment ! If you would like to make
use of tags yourself, you must have received the Wilson Lab lock-out/tag-out
training.
Access to G cave and hutches – Radiation badges have be worn for
work in the cave and the hutches. We encourage you to wear your radiation
badge at all times, when you work at G-line. Note that other access restrictions
may apply to the hutches, for instance during radiation surveys or laser
operation in G3.
Search buttons and dump buttons – A person wanting to
interlock a hutch for use of x-ray radiation has to search the hutch beforehand.
In order to enforce a thorough search, one or two search buttons are placed
inside each hutch. Multiple search buttons have to be searched in order
and are marked "SEARCH #1 of 2" etc. . Furthermore each hutch (G cave,
G1, G2, G3) is equipped with dump buttons that will close the line stops
and the line shutter instantaneously so that no radiation can get into
the hutches. A dump button should be hit immediately, when a person thinks
that he or she may have got accidentally locked in in a hutch.
Access to G vault – There is no shielding between CESR and the G
vault containing the G-line front-end. Hence G vault can only be accessed,
if CESR is not running. The Wilson Lab Safety Training is mandatory for
working in the vault. It is necessary to sign out a White Key from the
CESR Operator, in order to get into G cave without breaking the interlock.
If the interlock (light barrier) is broken by accident, the CESR Operator
should be notified immediately. Futher safety measures may be necessary
for work in the vault (key word "lock out"), for instance when working
close to the electrical bus bars.
Further infomation – If you have further questions, please contact
Detlef Smilgies or Jeff White. This tour only provides an overview of facility
and safety features of G-line. For more detailed information, safety manuals
posted on the G-line Safety Web page may be consulted. Further safety information
is provided in the on-line CHESS Safety Training and CHESS Safety Manuals.
